“This is the perfect time for me,” said Rev. Andrew Sims, Sr. “I have been coming to the meetings since they started about two years ago but this time allows me to better utilize my time,” stated Sims who is the Pastor of St. Nicholas Bethel Baptist Church and Spiritual Advisor to FirstThursday Jacksonville.

Jacksonville City council members The Honorable’s: William ‘Bill’ Gulliford, Jim Love and Joyce Morgan all attended the last monthly FirstThursday Jacksonville meeting.

“We are very excited that three of Jacksonville’s city council members decided to come to FirstThursday’s and listen to our members and friends about what we are doing to help our businesses become a strong small business community in the Northwest Quadrant and throughout Jacksonville”, stated said W. Larry Williams, President & CEO of the non-profit organization that provides advocacy, empowerment, marketing and professional networking to small, disadvantaged businesses with a special emphasis on African American and women businesses, FirstThursday’s World Wide.

A highlight of the meeting occurred when Dr. Richard Danford, President & CEO of the Jacksonville Urban League announced the league’s new loan match program for small businesses in Jacksonville and North Florida. “We have been working on this program for a while now. We have been conducting workshops, holding seminars and developing stake holders for this loan match program,” stated Dr. Danford of the JUL’s Entrepreneurship Program. “Our entrepreneurship program, headed by Director Reuben Mays is very effective in assisting the multitude of diverse businesses in our entrepreneurship program.”

W. Larry Williams will provide an update on all of the new programs and technology that FirstThursday’s are developing for small businesses.

Dr. Danford and his staff will provide an update on its loan match program for small businesses.

After the final segment of the meeting will feature the audience’s opportunity to participate in the FirstThursday’s now often copied but never duplicated 30 elevator speeches. Each attendee is provided an opportunity to introduce themselves and provide a brief (30 sec) summary of their business/product/service. The thirty seconds is based on the normal length of time between elevator floors. The challenge is to be able to “pitch” yourself or your business in the prescribed thirty seconds. It is a lot of fun and each person learns something about the others and themselves in a relaxed atmosphere.
